| This is an 8-week group that will focus on helping boys and girls in grades 5-8 identify, understand, and manage their emotions, develop skills to make friends, and improve overall comfort in social settings. Children develop at varying rates and sometime this creates a lag in appropriate social skills that can interfere with friendships, behavior at school, and at home. In addition to basic social skills and emotional expression, this group will introduce discussion about drugs and alcohol and age-appropriate “dating” relationships. Current research indicates that middle school is the time during which most children are first exposed to drug and alcohol use and issues of sexuality. As such, we will devote time in group to these and other important topics as appropriate. This group offers tips for children to help them develop healthy relationships with peers, while honoring each child's unique personality and developmental progress. Games, role-playing, art, and other creative techniques are utilized to give children an opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways. At times these groups will be gender specific and others will be co-ed, in each group we will divide children into appropriate age groups. Note: If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, call 911 or go directly to your local Emergency Room or Community Mental Health Center. Prince William County Emergency Mental Health Services can be reached 24 hours a day at 703-792-7800. |
